RECOVERY PHASE OF DENGUE
- DR. AK RANA
Dengue can be divided into 3 phases –
- Febrile phase
- Critical phase
- Recovery phase
Febrile phase
High fever is seen in this phase that can reach up to 104 *F or even more than that.
It may be accompanied with headache, vomiting, abdominal pain.
Maculopapular rash may be seen.
In classical dengue fever, along with usual symptoms associated with fever, rash and weakness is seen.
But in Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) that proceeds towards severity, we see thrombocytopenia (low platelets).
Due to this plasma leakage from blood vessels occur and thus the hematocrit value of blood increases.
LABORATORY FINDINGS
- Rising haematocrit value
- Thrombocytopenia
CRITICAL PHASE OF DENGUE
On Day 3-7 of dengue, when fever goes down, an increase in capillary permeability is seen.
It leads to plasma leakage & rapid rise in haematocrit.
This phase lasts for 24- 48 hours.
When increased plasma loss occurs, it can lead to shock.
It is preceded by symptoms like abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, blood in stool, nose, restlessness and oliguria.
Shock may lead to organ dysfunction.
RECOVERY PHASE OF DENGUE
If the patient survives in the 24-48 hours of critical phase of dengue, a gradual reabsorption of extravascular compartment of fluid takes place.
Persons regain appetite, there is a feeling of general well- being.
Hematocrit becomes normal or falls due to dilutional effect of reabsorbed fluid.
In case of severe dengue, increase plasma loss, can lead to extravascular fluid collection.
{Pulmonary oedema (difficulty in breathing) and ascites can also occur.}
There occurs decrease in blood volume called hypovolemia.
It can result in shock and damage to organs, leading to a very critical condition for patients.
“Prevention is better than cure”
- Wear protective clothing, shoes
- Clean your house and the surrounding area
- Avoid collection of water
- Use mosquito repellents
Timely see the doctor when you are unwell.
In the full course of Dengue, stay in touch with doctor. Take rest and drink plenty of fluids.
