sleepy while studying

sleep and study

  • BY DR. AK RANA

To feel sleepy while studying remains as a highly discussed topic among students to ponder on, to worry and to think of a way out.

Feeling so sleepy that your mind is not taking in even a single sentence that you read?

Or you waste lots of time sleeping/yawning and is not able to concentrate?

I have seen some students even wondering whether they have some disease that is making them so sleepy. For all of those, who are reading this article, I will say that it happens almost with everyone.

How I am so sure of it? Because it also happened to me. I even went to see doctor to prescribe me a medicine that can lift off that sleepy cloud on my head!

They laughed and I can fully understand them now.

How big this problem is, only those who went through it can know. Others can only guess.

Listen carefully,

You are neither lazy nor,

You are running away from anything.

Feeling sleepy is not your fault, so never feel guilty about it.

I will tell you some ways that can help you come out of this sleepy feeling.

But your motivation and positive attitude is most important in it.

  • KEEP MOVING HERE AND THERE

When you feel sleepy, keep notes with you to memorize a part and go for walk.

You don’t need to go out somewhere for it. It can also be done in your study room for 15- 20 minutes.

It has two benefits –

You will be doing exercise that is good for health and you will also be able to shake off that sleepy mind.

  • TAKE A NAP FOR 10 -15 MINUTES AFTER 1 HOUR

Now, this is a risky move because you might keep sleeping for 1 hour!

To avoid that set alarm/timer for 10 minutes and yes! Your inner motivation is needed.

Studies have told that short naps are really very good and efficient way of relaxing mind and refreshing it for piles of work that you got.

  • CONCENTRATION

We often feel sleepy in a subject that is beyond our understanding or a topic we find hard to deal with.

Firstly, invest time in this topic, plenty of time…

I know, you are always short of time but you need to give adequate time for you to clear it.

Turn small sittings of concentration into long ones, try to calm yourself down and remove all the possible distractions away from you.

Frequently shifting your mindset from one thing to another, disturbs our concentration. If you also have this habit, then change it.

  • WASH YOUR FACE WITH COLD WATER

It helps in refreshing our mind.

  • DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
  • EAT LIGHT FOOD WITH LESS FATS

Heavy food takes more energy to break down and can make you feel tired.

Eating light food full of fibres, gives you energy and keeps your stomach full.

  • EAT SNACKS WHEN YOU FEEL SLEEPY

When we study, our brain works like machine and keeps craving for glucose.

Taking small breaks for eating snacks can make you feel more energetic & less sleepy.

  • FOLLOW A PROPER SLEEP-WAKE CYCLE

There should be a fixed time for you to sleep or wake-up.

6-7 hours are required and considered good sleep. In night, you must sleep at least for 6 hours. Don’t try to cut down sleep in search of hours because if you do so, it will make you sleepy all day which will in turn decrease efficiency.

  • TAKE SOME TIME OUT FOR YOGA AND EXERCISES

Along with being good for health, they will also keep you energetic, giving you adrenaline boost and build proper channel of positive thoughts.

Daily exercises give us positive energy, shielding us from emotions like sadness, frustration or low mood.

  • WRITE, SPEAK, READ WHEN YOU LEARN AND REVISE

When we involve our writing, reading and speaking skill while revising or learning a topic, it becomes easier.

Besides it keeps us busy and sleep fly away in seconds.

Dear students, you guys are already doing great, don’t try to become super human!

Also remember that every person has their strengths and weaknesses, different potentials and problems.

If you think that ‘XY’ person is perfect in everything, then you might be wrong and even if you are right then what else?

Why bother? XY will always be XY and you will always be you.

Once you understand this, you will know where you should focus.

It doesn’t matter if ‘XY’ faces this problem or not, because if you do then you do.

Try to find a solution, solve it, work more, your ways might be more curved but the final line is still the same.

“Never underestimate yourself

 You are amazing yourself

 The way you are!”

  1. I’m not sure exactly why but this blog is loading extremely slow for me.

Is anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end?
I’ll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.
