How to Be Truly Happy: Overcoming Regret and Embracing Life

- By Dr. AK Rana
Being Happy is not something you can buy, trade, earn, or steal.
You can’t lend it, give it away, or touch it. It’s not a mission to complete or a prize to win.
..
Happiness is simply happiness.
It doesn’t come from outside—it lies within us.
There are no set rules to attain happiness because no one can guarantee that, in the end, you will be happy. You may not feel happy, but that doesn’t mean you are sad. However, when you are truly happy, sadness cannot touch you.
Can someone be happy all the time? Not possible.
This is life—you can’t always be happy. There will be moments of sadness, neutrality, and joy. That’s just how it goes. This is why someone who has experienced life deeply may fall silent after laughter, fearing what follows next—because nothing is permanent. But those who have truly graduated from the course of life smile even after this thought, unafraid. They know how precious the present moment is. What comes next will be dealt with when it arrives—because worrying about what’s beyond our control is futile.
When Can a Person Not Be Happy?
When they can’t forgive themselves. When they are trapped in regret, unable to move forward.
There was a day in my life when I had to choose. But for a bigger opportunity, I let one go—only to realize later that I had missed a golden chance. I was puzzled. I tried again, but I failed. The one I let go, the one I didn’t respect, had already left me behind. All that remained was another path waiting ahead.
I regretted my choice, my foolishness in missing my chance. I kept wondering where I would have been if only I had been wise enough. Maybe it would have been a better time than now. Maybe I would have been happier.
But can anybody guarantee that?
That’s the thing about regret—it traps you in “what could have been,” even when there’s no way to know if it would have truly made you happier.
It is said that you are protected a million times before an arrow finally strikes you. And when it does, that one arrow becomes the cause of everything.
So now you might ask—if everything is written, what’s the point of trying?
Because…
“You can’t change the past, but you can change the future.”
And that is why you must take steps, one by one, slowly but steadily. You must try. Moving forward is the only way to make things possible. The first step toward your future, toward your happiness, is freeing yourself from the chains of regret.
..
Because happiness comes from within.
There’s no measure to it. A man driving a Mercedes isn’t necessarily happier than an auto driver. We don’t know their struggles. At the end of the day, it’s inner peace that brings true happiness.
(This is just an example—no rich vs. poor comparison here.)
The Key to Happiness
Focus on the present.
Learn from the past and move on.
Work for the future, but don’t forget to live in the moment.
That has always been the key to happiness.
