Is Franco Colapinto Leaving Alpine After the Austrian GP? Exclusive
  • By Dr. AK Rana

When Franco Colapinto debuted with Alpine at the Imola GP, replacing Jack Doohan, it was clearly stated he’d be driving for five races.

With the Austrian Grand Prix marking the end of that five-race stint, the biggest question in the F1 fan community right now is:

Will Franco Colapinto continue, or is Alpine preparing for another swap?

So far, Alpine hasn’t released an official statement. All we have is speculation floating on social media and fan forums.

But here’s what we do know for certain:

1. The 5-Race Deal Is Over

Colapinto’s 5-race trial ends in Austria. During this period, he hasn’t managed to score a single point, which naturally invites comparisons with Jack Doohan—who, by contrast, had some notable performances before being replaced.

That said, Alpine itself is far from its last year form, with the team struggling across the board.

A sudden leadership change, ongoing technical issues, and back-to-back driver swaps haven’t helped matters.

2. Colapinto Needs Time to Adapt

Franco Colapinto was a Williams driver before moving to Alpine and signed a multi-year reserve driver contract.

This was his first time driving for Alpine, and like any other young driver, he needs time to adapt—not just to the car but also to the team dynamics and engineering style.

The lack of results so far does not necessarily reflect his true potential.

But does Alpine operate on a different philosophy, preferring quick experiments over long-term cultivation?

3. Strategic Timing: Silverstone Could Be Key

There’s one important thing to note: the Austrian and British GPs are back-to-back.

Even if Alpine wants to make a driver change, logistics favor waiting until after Silverstone, when there’s a two-week gap.

That gives the team time to evaluate, compare data, and make a more permanent decision—without the disruption of back-to-back travel.

4. Franco Colapinto Might Still Finish the Season

Another possibility is that Alpine plans to continue the entire season with Franco, especially given the confidence they’ve shown in him through the multi-year deal.

If that’s the case,

The “5 races” statement might have been more of a diplomatic soft-launch after dropping Doohan mid-season.

5. What If Alpine Brings in a Third Driver?

Alpine has no shortage of reserve drivers, and fans are beginning to suspect the team could be playing a driver carousel game all season.

If neither Franco nor Jack ends up driving next, Alpine might “hard launch” another reserve driver altogether.

While that may serve sponsor interests and keep headlines buzzing, constantly rotating drivers isn’t a strategy for building champions.

To truly compete at the highest level, you need to nurture the driver-car relationship, invest in long-term development, and avoid knee-jerk decisions.

Success in Formula 1 comes through consistency, not hit-and-trial.

Whatever Alpine decides, fans deserve clarity. And Franco Colapinto, whether he continues or not, deserves a fair shot.
