With the F1 movie set to release in June, the motorsport community seems divided.

On one hand, there’s excitement and curiosity. On the other, particularly among die-hard F1 fans, there’s a wave of indifference — and even some skepticism.

Here’s the thing.

If you’re someone like me — someone who religiously follows the race weekend from Thursday’s driver wrap-up to Sunday’s post-race interviews — then you probably understand.

We stay awake till late night or wake up before dawn, and even take leave from work or even plan our work according to race schedules!

We love the raw, unscripted thrill of live F1.

The real drama.

The tire strategy twists, the team radio chaos, the rain-affected qualis, the heartbreaks and heroic comebacks.

Why would we trade all that for a fictionalized, cinematic version of our sport?

It’s not just F1 either. Be it any sport in the world, football, cricket etc. Fans of these sports often don’t vibe with made-up stories set in their beloved universes.

There’s a certain disconnect.

The magic lies in the unpredictability, the real stakes, the real sweat.

A scripted narrative just doesn’t hit the same.

But — and here’s the catch — when it comes to biopics or movies based on true events, it’s a different game altogether.

That’s when fans show up.

Think Rush (Hunt vs Lauda), MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Senna, or Ford v Ferrari. Because those aren’t just movies — they’re tributes. And fans love to relive iconic moments with that cinematic lens.

So, who is this F1 movie really for?

Movie lovers.

People who may not know the difference between FP1 and FP2, but love a well-made film.

For them, the world of motorsports is new, thrilling, and exotic.

Add big stars, top-tier cinematography, intense background scores — and boom, you have a potential blockbuster.

If the movie is aiming directly at hardcore F1 fans, I’d say the approach might miss the mark a bit (though hey, exceptions exist — and this is just one fan’s opinion).

Maybe it’s better marketed as a high-octane, adrenaline-fueled action drama — a Fast & Furious meets Formula 1 kind of ride.

And of course, it will bring more fans to F1 world, making it even more popular.

Let’s wait and watch.
