How many times has Punjab Kings qualified in the IPL playoffs? It’s been over a decade since their last appearance—yes, a full decade! Before Shreyas Iyer entered the squad as a captain.

No matter how well they play, how high they score, or how promising their campaign looks, somehow, luck never sides with them.

Their journey has often been a tale of heartbreak.

Even Rishabh Pant sighed with relief after auction and said,

“I was so happy Punjab Kings didn’t pick me.”

That speaks volumes about the franchise’s reputation for misfortune.

But this season?

Tables have turned.

Punjab Kings picked Shreyas Iyer as their new captain—and maybe, just maybe, that decision changed everything.

Now, here’s the twist.

Shreyas was with Kolkata Knight Riders last season.

KKR went on to lift the trophy. Ironically, their captain wasn’t in form, and the franchise decided to drop him.

Perhaps they thought: Why not bring in another batsman instead? After all, what can a captain really change?

Well, a lot, it seems.

Because,

Guess who didn’t qualify this season?

KKR.

And guess who did?

Punjab Kings—under the leadership of the very same Shreyas Iyer.

There has to be something special about this guy. Be it his calmness under pressure, his on-field strategies, or the ability to let his players shine, he brings a subtle magic that doesn’t always make headlines.

No controversies. No aggressive posturing. No viral one-liners.

Just cricket.

He led Delhi Capitals to consecutive qualifications, even a final.

And then they replaced him.

Since then, Delhi’s performance has been inconsistent.

Coincidence?

We’re not saying the captain is everything.

Of course, a team’s strength matters—batting, bowling, fielding, all of it.

But,

When a team loses,

the blame almost always falls on the captain.

When they win,

the team gets the credit.

Still, when your team plays well consistently and yet fails to cross the line—like Rajasthan Royals this season—maybe leadership does have a role after all.

Now, Punjab Kings have qualified and are still in the hunt for that top spot.

Could this be the year the underdogs finally rewrite their story?

Best of luck, Punjab Kings. This might just be the year.
