How to Analyze India’s Victory Over Pakistan in Champions Trophy 2025?

-by Dr. AK Rana India vs Pakistan, a match hyped all over the world, became a hit picture for India winning the match along with wiping out host country Pakistan out of the Champions Trophy race.

From Kohli breaking Sachin’s record for the fastest ODI runs milestone to hitting a century, to our young vice-captain Shubman Gill maintaining his awesome form, to India sealing the victory in just 43 overs—this match was a clear revenge for the 2017 final!

But along with celebrating this victory, there is one concerning situation for Team India as Shami struggles with his old injury, which is not a good sign but have to rethink their bowling order as Shami suffers from injury.

2025 ICC Champions Trophy

It should have been a spectacle for Indian cricket, but instead, we are left grappling with a harsh reality—our best bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, are struggling with injuries. Overburdened, overworked, they are now forced to watch from the sidelines.

Bumrah, the world’s No. 1 bowler, carried an impossible workload during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He wasn’t just expected to bowl fiery spells but also contribute with the bat. The relentless schedule and lack of support from other pacers took their toll, and despite his best efforts, his old injury resurfaced, ruling him out of the biggest ICC tournament of the year. Fans, desperate for his return, flooded social media with unreasonable demands: “If he can shoot ads or walk, he can bowl!” Some even questioned his commitment, over his absence in the Champions Trophy.

These ‘fans’ fail to understand the sheer physicality of bowling at 140+ km/h consistently. The precision, control, and variation required from a fast bowler are unmatched. A single injury can send shockwaves through a bowler’s spine, making every ball a painful ordeal.

Then there’s Shami, who made his comeback during the India vs. England ODI series in 2025, this month, after surgery. He was supposed to be our key weapon in the Champions Trophy, especially in Bumrah’s absence.

A brilliant spell against Bangladesh gave hope, but when it mattered most against Pakistan, pain resurfaced. He bowled five wides in his first over before heading back to the bench. He tried again, but injuries don’t listen to willpower—they demand time.

But the real question is—why are we even in this situation?

How many fast bowlers does India have who can bowl match-winning spells? What happens when our only options are injured?

The answer is simple—India does not value pure bowlers.

In a country obsessed with all-rounders, genuine pacers are sidelined. Bowlers are expected to take 1-2 wickets, maybe contribute a few runs, but are never given the respect or long-term security they deserve. Young bowlers who should be focusing on their craft are told they must bat to be considered for selection.

But tell me, when Bumrah and Shami were young, were they expected to bat? No. Their job was to terrorize opposition batters with unplayable deliveries. A fast bowler’s value isn’t measured by how many sixes they hit—it’s in how they make the opposition rethink every shot.

If this mindset doesn’t change, India will soon run out of world-class pacers like Bumrah. Because if a 20-year-old bowler is told,

“Only all-rounders are selected,”

why would he even try to become the next Bumrah?

We wish both Bumrah and Shami a speedy recovery and hope Indian selectors recognize the importance of nurturing fast-bowling talent before it’s too late.

“Learn from the past. Cherish the present. Never stop preparing for the future.”
