They\u2019ve become something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, they&#8217;re just scary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Because instead of using practice to improve car performance or build rhythm, drivers have a new top priority:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t get a penalty.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yes, you read that right \u2014 not even in qualifying or the actual race, but in practice sessions!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems like practice sessions are no longer about learning \u2014 they\u2019re about tiptoeing through a penalty minefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re just warming up tires or slowly exiting a corner, if you accidentally get in the way of another driver (who may or may not be overreacting), all it takes is one radio complaint and BOOM \u2014 grid drop penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So now, forget your hard-earned qualifying position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That stunning P4 you secured?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wiped out by a minor incident in a practice session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What kind of system is that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It almost makes you wonder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Is this a subtle strategy to boost viewership during practice sessions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because now fans are glued to their screens, wondering: \u201cWho\u2019s getting a grid penalty today?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and how can we forget,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;Yuki Tsunoda Canadian GP incident?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A classic example of why practice session penalties in 2025 are becoming laughable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He got a 10-place grid drop\u2014in practice\u2014for overtaking under a red flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sounds serious, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the real story: Oscar Piastri had just crashed into the Wall of Champions and was crawling on track with a damaged car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tsunoda was right behind him and had two options:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Slam on the brakes and stay dangerously close to a wrecked car throwing debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Quickly pass him and then settle down after the red flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He chose safety. He passed. And what did he get?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A 10-place penalty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So basically, F1 is saying\u2014\u201cNext time there&#8217;s a crash, brake hard and sit there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let debris fly into your face, but dare you not overtake!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was beyond harsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, it was hilarious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when the stewards aren\u2019t sure what penalty to give?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They just slap you with a fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good chunk of money gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where does it go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe into a mystery \u201covertaking fund.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Because yes, in F1 now, you\u2019re on track doing 300 km\/h, but it\u2019s your radio messages that determine if you\u2019re getting a yellow card, a fine, or an empty wallet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers are left with two choices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Complain first. Loudly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone even slightly hinders your line \u2014 scream on the radio! Make a scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;It\u2019s no longer just about focus; it\u2019s about turning practice into a penalty trap for your rivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Play it safe. Stay invisible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use as little track time as possible. Just hide on the sidelines and pray you\u2019re not involved in anything that gets reviewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And let\u2019s not even get started on inconsistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3-place drop, 5 seconds, 10 seconds \u2014 or sometimes nothing at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What decides the penalty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s the severity, or maybe it\u2019s just who looks more aggressive on the footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or whether someone said &#8220;sorry&#8221; convincingly enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or maybe your PR team didn\u2019t clean up the mess quickly enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who knows?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Defend yourself? Penalty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Feel threatened? Penalty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exist during practice?
