AK RANA<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever felt hungry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming back home from school \/college or work when you run towards the kitchen to search for things that you can eat; and if you find nothing you get all moody , with your stomach rumbling and feeling light headedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these come under hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hunger is a physiological phenomenon that occurs when you haven\u2019t eaten for long time and when body is low in sugar and calories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need energy for completing any task and even thinking without moving an inch from your place is a tiring task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ATP is the energy currency of our body which is needed everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, when you think various synapses are formed and nerve impulses travel through neurons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For generating the exact potential called action potential for transmission, sodium, potassium and other ions comes out and moves inward requiring ATP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need ATP for absorption of nutrients, for breaking down carbohydrates, for energy storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For ATP generation, we need carbohydrates, fats that come from the food that we eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-blush-light-purple-gradient-background has-background\"><strong><u>WHY DO WE FEEL HUNGRY?<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you don\u2019t take food for long time <strong>Ghrelin<\/strong> is released from stomach and other parts of GIT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It increases appetite, and causes gastric acid secretion telling us to take food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leptin<\/strong> is another hormone that is secreted by fat cells which acts on brain and send signal that enough calories have been stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food intake should now be inhibited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IN THE BRAIN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hypothalamus plays important role in food regulation-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arcuate nucleus<\/strong> plays the role of integrating centre in regulating food intake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lateral nucleus<\/strong> \u2013 increases food intake with the help of neurotransmitter <strong>orexin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ventromedial nucleus<\/strong> \u2013 Decrease in food intake and increases satiety behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hunger is physiological phenomenon where body seeks energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appetite is a little more psychological concept based on what and how much you eat or you feel like eating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might want to eat \u2018Rasmalai\u2019 but not the healthy pulses and chapatties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That feeling to eat something daily almost at exact point of time is also coping up with routine timetable of yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can be hungry and have good appetite also.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might also be full and have good appetite, when you see your favorite chocolate cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time you have appetite only for the cake and nothing else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, what is this craving?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We crave for our favorite foods and they are usually sweet or spicy. We want to eat it all the time, whether we are hungry or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want to eat them again and again and these thoughts won\u2019t leave us alone. It\u2019s difficult to resist craving .Carbohydrates are usually more associated with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"784\" src=\"https:\/\/halleysclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20190914_154835.jpg\" alt=\"hungry? time to eat food...\" class=\"wp-image-98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/halleysclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20190914_154835.jpg 864w, https:\/\/halleysclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20190914_154835-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/halleysclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20190914_154835-768x697.jpg 768w, https:\/\/halleysclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/20190914_154835-600x544.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hunger<\/strong> \u2013 Feeling so hungry, I skipped my lunch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Appetite<\/strong> \u201cI want to eat Masala dosa\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cWhy don\u2019t you eat fried rice?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cNo! I am not hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Craving<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cI want to eat the burger that I ate in&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the yesterday\u2019s party.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s order burger today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will eat burger in dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, you would have understood this simple yet complex mechanism of our hunger.
