Exclusive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By Dr. AK Rana<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At most circuits, pole position is a golden ticket\u2014you start ahead, control the pace, and defend your position into Turn 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at Spa-Francorchamps, being on pole can feel like being a sitting duck with a target painted on your rear wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Setup: From La Source to Les Combes (Turn 1 \u2192 Turn 5)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The race starts at La Source (Turn 1), a tight right-hand hairpin that immediately bunches up the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the real chaos begins: Drivers go flat-out through the sweeping, iconic Eau Rouge (Turn 2) and Raidillon (Turn 3), climbing steeply uphill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That leads into the Kemmel Straight, which ends at Les Combes (Turn 5), a prime overtaking zone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where aerodynamics and physics start ganging up on the pole-sitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slipstream: The Invisible Slingshot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the lead car punches through the air, it creates a low-pressure zone behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trailing car, tucked in close, faces less air resistance,like cycling behind someone or drafting in NASCAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What it means for F1:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The car behind gains speed more easily while saving fuel and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time they reach the end of the Kemmel Straight, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">they\u2019re often going 10\u201315 km\/h faster than the leader.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not just an edge\u2014it\u2019s an automatic overtaking boost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DRS: The Legal Cheat Code<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Lap 2 onward, DRS (Drag Reduction System) is enabled on the Kemmel Straight (Turn 4 to Turn 5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This system opens a flap on the rear wing, massively reducing drag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A driver within 1 second of the car ahead gets to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Spa, that means 200\u2013300 extra metres of top-speed firepower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combine that with the slipstream?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pole-sitter often can\u2019t defend, even with perfect driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Pole Position Feels Like a Trap at Spa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of gaining a lead, the driver starting P1 might:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take Turn 1 (La Source) cleanly\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But see two or three cars looming in the mirrors as they exit Turn 3 (Raidillon),<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And lose the lead before Turn 5 (Les Combes)\u2014even without making a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This makes drivers prefer starting P2 or P3, where they can sit back, charge up the slipstream, and pounce, almost effortlessly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oscar Piastri won pole position at spa, although in sprint qualifying but still a pole for the mini-race ahead. He seemed bothered, as if when you are trying to come 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and accidently, by mistake you came at 1<sup>st<\/sup> position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Max Verstappen used to come at pole position but started race, way down in the grid, due to engine\/power unit changes, and still won the race.
