New regulation

By Dr. AK Rana

Let’s talk about how Formula 1 is reinventing overtaking from 2026! DRS is going out, and MOM is coming in.

But what’s the real difference?

Let’s break it down:

…

What is DRS (Drag Reduction System)?

DRS was introduced in 2011.

It opens a flap on the rear wing to reduce drag.

Only used in special DRS zones if you’re within 1 second of the car ahead.

Helps you go 10–12 km/h faster on straights.

…

Physics:

Less drag = more speed.

But also = less downforce, so the car can feel unstable

…

Implication:

DRS made overtaking easier, but many fans felt it made things too predictable.

…

What is MOM (Manual Override Mode)?

From 2026, DRS is gone.

MOM replaces it.

MOM is Formula 1’s fresh approach to overtaking for 2026. Instead of relying on a movable rear wing, drivers will now have a manual override to unlock additional electrical power for overtaking.

This taps into the hybrid engine’s electric side, providing a short power boost that the driver can control.

How it works:

…

MOM gives the pursuing driver access to more battery power for a limited time.

The defending driver cannot use the same boost while being attacked.

…

Physics:

Electric motors = instant torque = faster acceleration.

No change in aerodynamic profile, so cars stay stable through fast corners.

…

What is Active Aerodynamics?

Along with MOM, 2026 F1 cars will feature active aerodynamics. These allow the wings to adjust based on driving conditions:

…

“Z-mode” for high downforce in corners.

“X-mode” for low drag on straights.

Unlike DRS, these wing changes are not for overtaking, but for efficiency and handling.

They will be driver-activated but in a more controlled, symmetrical way.

…

DRS vs MOM – Quick Comparison

Tech Used:

DRS = rear wing flap

MOM = electric power boost

Activation:

DRS = limited zones

MOM = flexible, driver-controlled

Effect:

DRS = lower drag

MOM = more power, instant torque

Stability:

DRS = less stable in corners

MOM = stable, no aero change

Style:

DRS = often predictable

MOM = more strategic

…

What Does This Mean for Racing?

✅ More driver skill: With MOM, drivers will need to plan their overtakes, manage energy deployment, and choose the right moment.

✅ Cleaner battles: Active aero and MOM won’t alter car balance mid-corner like DRS sometimes did. Expect tighter, wheel-to-wheel action.

⚠️ Potential downside? Battery power is limited.
